LONDON - A British soldier was killed on Saturday during operations in Southern Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence said.

It said the death of the soldier from the 2nd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment took to 86 the number of British personnel killed in Afghanistan since October 2001.

The ministry did not say exactly where or in what circumstances the soldier was killed.

An operation to retake the town of Musa Qaleh from Taliban hands in Helmand province in southern Afghanistan, involving British, American and Afghan troops, began on Friday.
