A police officer, who was cleared of wrongdoing after CCTV cameras showed him punching a woman he was trying to arrest, has died after being found on a Welsh mountainside.

Pc Anthony Mulhall, of South Yorkshire Police, died in hospital after being found by rescue teams on Mount Snowdon on Thursday.

A post mortem, to find the cause of death, has yet to be arranged.

He is the second policeman to have died on the mountain this year. Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police Michael Todd was discovered dead in March.

Mulhall was reported missing from his home in Rotherham on Wednesday, and was found on Thursday and placed in intensive care. He later died on Friday.

South Yorkshire's Chief Constable Meredydd Hughes paid tribute to the officer, who had served with the force for more than 11 years.

"This is terrible news and our condolences go out to his family," he said in a statement.

"Pc Mulhall was highly regarded and will be missed by all his colleagues and friends."

Mulhall was investigated last year after a woman complained she had been hit during her arrest outside a nightclub in Sheffield.

Officers had been called after receiving reports that some vehicles had been damaged.

Leaked CCTV footage showed Mulhall forcibly restraining the woman, but the Independent Police Complaints Commission said no charges should be brought as he had used "justified and proportionate force" to someone who was being aggressive and actively resisting arrest. He returned to frontline duties.

The woman admitted a charge of criminal damage and was given a conditional discharge and ordered to pay 250 pounds compensation.
