Six young people have been killed after a serious crash involving a car and a lorry near Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire, police said on Thursday.

The accident occurred about a mile south of the town on the A607 road shortly before 2 a.m.

The six who died were in a Ford Mondeo. Police said the driver of the car was a 23-year-old man. Neither he nor the other victims have been formally identified yet.

The 48-year-old lorry driver was initially arrested in connection with the incident but later released without charge and is receiving hospital treatment.

The road has been closed while further investigations take place and is expected to remain shut for most of the day.
