Trevor Phillips OBE, chair of the new Commission for Equalities and Human Rights, has recently opened new multi-faith prayer rooms at Guy's Hospital in London.
According to hospital bosses, the prayer rooms are designed for people of all faiths, as well as those who do not have a particular religious belief.There is a quiet prayer space as well as a larger worship/gathering room available for groups who wish to study their scriptures together, meditate or hold communion services, reports LondonSE1.
Patients, staff and relatives are also welcome to make use of a counselling room where they can speak to a member of the spiritual healthcare team in private.
"I am delighted to have been given the honour of officially opening Guy's Hospital's multi-faith prayer rooms," says Phillips.
"This is just one of the ways in which the trust has worked to serve the whole of its community, in this diverse and vibrant part of South London, as well as many patients from all over the country seeking specialist services."
Rev Mia Hilborn, head of spiritual healthcare at Guy's and St Thomas', added: "The prayer rooms offer a quiet place for patients and their relatives, and for staff in our busy hospital environment. They are also available for relatives and friends to reflect as they wait to see their loved ones. We are delighted to have this facility."
The historic Guy's Chapel near the St Thomas' Street entrance is still open to patients, medical students and visitors. The chapel is run by King's College London's chaplaincy service.
