Description

Jesus, Revolutionary of Peace: A Nonviolent Christology in the Book of Revelation, as the title suggests, demonstrates that the figure of Jesus in the Book of Revelation can be best understood as an active nonviolent revolutionary. It has usually been argued that Jesus in the Book of Revelation is not the Jesus in the Gospels: a teacher of compassion and mercy. This view will be challenged. Nonviolence as understood by Mahatma Gandhi will help us in our understanding of the Jesus of the Book of Revelation. Jesus was a warrior of the nonviolent tradition. He sought to conquer his enemies not through violence but through love. Victory of Jesus was the transformation from violence and hatred to love and compassion. The combination of descriptions of Jesus as "'faithful witness"', "'pierced servant"', "'son of man"', "'lamb"' and "'warrior"' depict a martyr figure who dies out of love for the world. The Book of Revelation is rooted in a theology of the cross. Jesus challenges the values of the violent world: power, vengeance and greed. He does this by rejecting these values as ways of achieving his victory. Jesus embraces weakness, compassion and forgiveness. He accepts execution as a way of showing his love for the world. In his readiness to die, Jesus challenges the violence in human beings and brings about their transformation from violence to love.
