Description Great value for money, Volume 2 in the popular Songs of Taizé series contains 25 songs from the Taizé Community. The music that has come out of Taizé is contemplative in nature, with simple, repeated chorale-like refrains (O Lord, Hear My Prayer is one of the best known).
These songs can be sung many times, creating a powerful and worshipful effect, often growing in intensity. Instrumental parts, improvisational in style, can weave in and out and there are often parts for solo singers, which are either sung as verses separate from the refrain or integrated into the refrain. The chants (as they are often called) of Taizé are in many languages, reflecting the nature of the community. On this recording, English, French and Latin are the languages used.
There are a number of additional instruments featured on this recording – recorders, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, trumpet and guitar all have a role to play in creating the quietly ecstatic style that has come to be associated with Taizé. Produced by Christopher Norton for CN Productions and recorded at St Cuthbert’s Church, Edinburgh by Harold Barnes and Frank Mizen.
