Description What is Charismatic worship? If you don’t know, then this book is sensible way to begin to find out. Far more significantly, if you think you do know, then this book will certainly broaden, and quite probably change your perspective. It breaks through many stereotypes, and offers an impartial observation and reflection of churches that identify themselves as charismatic.
The meat of it consists of two aspects: a case-study of worship in six Anglican parish churches (covering a wide variety of churchmanship and worship styles); and a theological appraisal of the observations made in those churches. The approach is admirable, taking in the views and experiences of church leaders, music leaders, congregation members, and independent observers.
Coming as it does from a doctoral dissertation, it is sometimes unnecessarily wordy, but you can easily enough discern which sections of the book are most worth reading in full. Personally I believe the book is worth buying, if only for its final chapter of theological appraisal. No matter what your own style of worship, the tools to constructively critique what you do are invaluable.
For anyone involved in planning or leading Christian worship, this is a book that has the potential to significantly enrich your practice, whatever your churchmanship.
